Beyond the Moodboard:
When Builders and Designers Work as One Team, Extraordinary Homes Take Shape
When it came to choosing materials, we incorporated wood from the property into elements throughout the home, adding warmth, authenticity, and a strong sense of place.

The most memorable homes are rarely the result of one vision alone. They happen when a builder and designer trust each other enough to collaborate early, communicate openly, and solve problems together throughout the life of a project.
That was certainly true in our recent collaboration with Live Edge Builders on a mountain home in Western North Carolina. The property featured everything people dream about in this region: layered mountain views, rolling terrain, towering hardwoods, and a connection to nature that instantly slows your breathing the moment you arrive.
But while the setting itself was extraordinary, what ultimately made the home feel special was the working relationship between the builder, the homeowner and our team at FS Design Group.
From the earliest conversations, this project was approached as a partnership rather than a sequence of disconnected responsibilities. That distinction matters more than many homeowners realize.
Too often, builders construct the home first and designers are brought in later to “decorate” the finished structure. While beautiful results are still possible, something deeper is often missed — the opportunity to create a home where architecture, craftsmanship, materials, and interiors all support the same emotional experience.
In this project, collaboration started early enough that the home’s character could be shaped from the inside out. And one of the best examples came from the site itself. Several white oak trees had to be cleared during construction to make room for the home.
Rather than treating those trees as debris to be removed, Live Edge Builders recognized their potential as part of the story of the house. Together, we explored ways those materials could be reintroduced into the design in bunk beds, shelves and nickel-gap wall installations.
The result was the incorporation of wood from the property into elements throughout the home, adding warmth, authenticity, and a strong sense of place. Those details created an emotional connection to the land that simply cannot be replicated with materials ordered from a catalog.
The same collaborative spirit extended into every aspect of the project. The craftsmanship evident in Live Edge Builder’s work deserved to be seen and appreciated, not hidden beneath trends or excessive ornamentation.
Our role as designers was not to compete with the architecture or construction, but to highlight it. Carefully selected finishes, lighting, textures, and furnishings allowed the builder’s artistry to become part of the visual experience of the home itself. Sightlines were preserved.
Materials were repeated intentionally. Architectural moments were given room to breathe. Local artisans were commissioned to build custom furniture pieces to mimic the home’s natural vibe and fit seamlessly into the floorplan. Just as importantly, the homeowners came into the project with a very clear emotional vision for how they wanted the home to feel.
They weren’t simply asking for a mountain house. They wanted comfort without heaviness. Sophistication without formality. Warmth without clutter. They wanted spaces that felt grounded in the mountains while still feeling refined and livable for modern life.
The feeling the homeowners wanted to evoke was integrated into everything, whether ceiling heights, window placement, natural materials, lighting transitions, gathering spaces, and the flow from one room to another.
That level of cohesion is difficult to achieve when teams work independently. The best builder-designer relationships create homes where nothing feels accidental. Every decision supports the larger vision.
Every trade contributes to the same story. The result is a home that feels authentic, intentional, and deeply personal to the people who live there. When trust, craftsmanship, creativity, and communication come together early in a project, the final result becomes more than a beautiful home.
It becomes an experience that could never have been created any other way.
